Rapidly emerging as a dominant pest threat in apartments, houses and the work place, as well as different modes of transportation, Bed Bug infestation is on the rise worldwide. We have been getting reports of bites and infestations, from cruise ships, five-star hotels, college dorms and private residences, are more and more common.
As the danger of bed bug infestations increases, industry leaders agree: early detection and post-treatment testing using the CDC 3000 are two of the most significant elements to a Bed Bug free environment.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
CIMEX SCIENCE laboratory started investigating chemical ecology of blood feeding arthropods in 1999. First working with ticks and then kissing bugs, in 2005 Cimex Science became aware of the increasing global bedbug problem. They applied this research methodology to the increasing bed bug situation.
From researching bedbug responses to a wide range of stimuli including sounds, temperature, host, odours and physical designs and videotaping bed bug behaviour, they were able to manufacture the CDC 3000. The CDC 3000 is a precision instrument scientifically assembles for the early detection of bed bug populations. It is now commercially available in Canada for deployment in bed bug Intergrated Pest Management programs.

As heat attracts Bed Bugs, to capture and control them the CDC 3000 uses electricity to create the precise heat and gradient |

The CDC 3000 has a locking mechanism and can be secured on location. This |

without concern of tampering or loss of device. |

A precise attractant chemistry and adhesive combination optimizes the capture once the bed bugs enter the trapping device. This optimal blend derived from high screening of >50 individual mammalian host odor compounds, and subsequent combination of those components with the highest activity in olfactometer and arena studies. The capture slide is single use and provides a “document” that can be archived for future control measures.
To attract bed bugs to the CDC 3000, CO2 is a critical substance. Supplied by single use cartridges and a flow control system render an estimated 10 hours of detection. Determined through experimental evaluation of increasing dosages the results suggest that bed bug response is suppressed when CO2 rates exceed a certain threshold.
PRECISION SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT:
The CDC 3000 is a precision scientific instrument that exploits bed bug host seeking behavior by creating a desirable artificial point source, that bed bugs “think” is a blood meal. Within seconds of the activation the CDC 3000 releases a combination of CO2, heat and host attractant odor signals in the room.
Lab tests with adult bed bugs (7 days post-feeding), consistently proved that the CDC 3000 captured 70% of bugs released within 9ft 2 inches. To test orientation over longer distances, and determined that bedbugs will move 12 feet to the CDC 3000 we have built a “Bed Bug Drag Strip” that proved that some bugs can cover six square feet in less than three minutes.
A complete study detailing on response time versus distance are ongoing. At NPMA’s PESTWORLD ’08, Cimex Science launched the initial prototype CDC 3000. With the input of commercial clients and the research community since the inception of the CDC 3000, modifications have been made. As of this year February 2009, this Scientific Bed Bug Detector is now available for commercial use as well as collaboration with the research and technical community.
